How to Increase Literacy through StationsOverview
A stations-based approach to instruction and assessment is always an interactive way to engage students and to differentiate instruction. When it comes to literacy, this is a great opportunity to work in multiple forms of media, genres, and other "types" of literacy to appeal to the diverse students we teach today. Adapted from a RESA training at Columbia University's Teachers College, the following stations-based activities will allow teachers to personalize learning opportunities for students that center on developing literacy in all subject areas. Students will interact in groups with the station options below to contribute their findings to a guiding question or essential question to answer at the conclusion of the activity to culminate or summarize information synthesized. Explanation of Below Resources Generic directions, questions, and "jot prompts" are provided below for each station that can be used in a teacher's literacy-based lesson. Directions are provided to guide students as they rotate to each station with their group. Questions await students at each station to guide them in their inquiry with the provided resources. Jot Prompts are meant to assist students to add another layer of inquiry and discussion to their work. **CLICK HERE to load the example station activity on Civil Rights demonstrated in this session.** Individual Station Options w/ Activities
